Dedicated to the Ocean

Sea Shelter is a small group of real people carrying out ocean conservation in the Hunter Region NSW.

Our mission is to educate and act on the following principal categories:

RESCUE

It’s a tough world in the deep blue sea, and sometimes animals are found washed up, floating close to shore, or spotted by a passing boat, many close to death. They could have been struck by a boat, another victim of the plastic problem, or starving and lethargic. Whatever the problem is, Sea Shelter aims to rescue any marine fish or reptile in the Port Stephens area with the help of a dedicated team of volunteers and vigilant public eyes.

REHABILITATION

Marine rehabilitation is very few and far between, with a small splattering of dedicated establishments up the coast. Ses Shelter aims to bridge the gap in the Hunter specifically for fish & marine reptiles. Each animal is assessed and treated for whatever condition in may be in, whether that be x-rays, antibiotics, or strict diet until they’re healthy again.

RELEASE

This is an incredibly important, and very rewarding part as our marine life are vital to the ecosystem and need all the help they can get. Releasing the healthy rescues back into their home gives them a second chance at life and allows them to keep our ocean ecosystems healthy!

REGENERATION

Marine habitats are being lost at an alarming rate, whether it’s the mangroves, salt marshes, sea grass beds, giant sponge beds, soft corals or a tiny Sea Horse garden. Port Stephens and the Hunter is a known marine ecological hotspot in Australia and we are making it our mission to maintain, assist in attenuation programs or regenerate the habitats already lost.

RESEARCH

Our current understanding about the blue planet is very restricted , we have barely scraped the surface, with new animals and processes being discovered every single day. Research no matter how large or small is of the utmost importance for the future of our planet. Some of the most common techniques of recording fish numbers is to just ask the fisherman how many they are catching, alternatively our program will contribute to the knowledge base of Elasmobranches age and growth characteristics to allow for the construction of age-based population models together with the consideration of other life history aspects and removal rates by fisheries.

Sea Shelter runs entirely off volunteers donating our time for the sake of the ocean, allowing all the profits to go straight to the Ocean.
